Ghanaian footballer Raphael Dwamena, 28, lost his life after collapsing during a match in the Albanian league. The distressing incident occurred in the 28th minute of a game between FK Egnatia and Partizani.
Prompted by his sudden fall, the referee swiftly halted the match, and medical professionals rushed to his aid. Despite being transported to the hospital, efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Dwamena, known for his contributions to Red Bull Salzburg and Spanish clubs like Levante and Zaragoza.
In 2017, he was diagnosed with a heart condition, leading to a surgery in January 2020 for an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) during his time with Levante UD.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed their condolences, stating, “Our hearts go out to Raphael Dwamena’s family. He served Ghana with dedication until his untimely passing. His commitment to the National Team will be greatly missed. Rest In Peace Raphael!”
Former teams and fans took to social media to pay homage to the late forward. Dwamena’s journey included a failed transfer to Brighton and Hove Albion in 2019 due to medical reasons.
