Several Twitter users have reacted to the statement emanating from the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele on the January 31st deadline on the return of the old Naira notes.
Emefiele, rather, urged those who might still be holding on to the old banknotes to turn them in, assuring them they would not be harassed by the anti-graft agencies.
In a recent press conference, the CBN governor has said “Unfortunately, I don’t have good news for those who feel that we should shift the deadline. My apologies.
“The reason is because, just as the President had said on more than two occasions … for us 90 days, in fact we feel is 100 days, is enough for anybody who has money or the old currency to deposit the money in the banks.,” the apex bank’s chief said.
This statement has not gone down well with many Nigerians who took to Twitter to knock the apex bank’s chief.
In series of tweets monitored by QUEST TIMES, Nigerians expressed their displeasure at the policy.
A twitter user, @Hassan_0226 said the rich are oblivious of the plights of the poor Nigerians , to deposit funds has never been a problem.
“ATMs were dispensing old notes as at last week, now ATMS aren’t dispensing anything again @ Godwin Emefiele wants a cashless policy without considering how it affects Nigerians ” he said
Another user, @AlhajiDNA said its so funny how some Nigerians are applauding this, well many of you are living in the city, so it has little or no negative effect on you.
“If you want to see the real negative impacts, go to the rural area, it is going to create some problem than the one it is trying to solve, he said.
