President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated his support for the naira redesign program, claiming that it will discourage politicians from buying votes in the 2023 election.
He stated this while speaking at an All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign rally in Nasarawa state on Saturday.
Buhari stated that the currency redesign was not aimed at the poor but rather at deterring politicians from using it “mobilising resources to intimidate voters in the 2023 general election”.
Buhari’s statement comes amid rumors of feuding inside the APC following the party’s presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu’s, outburst during a rally in Ogun state, where he expressed discontent with the country’s fuel and currency scarcity.
“Even if you change the ink on naira notes, what you want will not happen. We will win. That umbrella party will lose. We will take this government from them — saboteurs that are dragging power with us,” said Tinubu in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun.
Buhari lauded the former governor of Lagos as a “qualified Nigerian” who will give his all for the country.
He said, “I’m very pleased today to be part of this campaign for Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the next president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.
