In a statement ahead of the governorship elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states scheduled for Saturday, November 11, former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, who represented the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 2023 election, called upon residents of these states to come out and vote for PDP candidates.
These off-cycle elections mark the first major polls since the 2023 general elections. Atiku acknowledged growing discontent over the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not meeting its transparency commitments during the last general elections but stressed the significance of maintaining faith in democracy.
He urged the people of Imo, Bayelsa, and Kogi states to participate actively in the democratic process, emphasizing that it is a vital means of effecting positive change. Atiku particularly highlighted the importance of supporting the PDP candidates in these states.
In Bayelsa, Governor Duoye Diri’s leadership was commended for its direct accountability to the people, with notable achievements in infrastructure and social development.
Senator Dino Melaye, running for governor in Kogi, was described as a candidate with a strong commitment to serving the people and driving development in his constituency.
In Imo State, Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu’s grassroots-focused leadership and dedication to protecting his constituents’ interests were emphasized as qualities that could elevate the state’s governance.
Atiku pointed out a contrast between the PDP and the APC in terms of candidate selection, with the latter seemingly influenced by powerful figures within or outside the states.
In conclusion, Atiku stressed that these elections are about the people and not political godfathers. He called on the residents of Imo, Bayelsa, and Kogi to participate in large numbers, voting for the PDP and rejecting the APC, which, in his view, has caused hardship and suffering.
These elections, according to Atiku, have a profound impact on the welfare of ordinary citizens, and the outcome will determine the future of democracy in these states.
