In a decisive response to the escalating security challenges within the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Governor Caleb Mutfwang has declared a 24-hour curfew, effective immediately.
The governor’s spokesperson, Gyang Bere, disclosed that this stern measure follows extensive consultations with relevant security agencies, aiming to prevent a breakdown of law and order in the region.
The governor urged citizens, especially Mangu residents, to adhere to the sit-at-home order. Only individuals engaged in essential duties will be permitted to move within the local government area until further notice. Governor Mutfwang expressed concern over the persistent efforts of some individuals to foster an insecure environment, despite the government’s ongoing initiatives to quell the activities of terrorist elements.
In his statement, Governor Mutfwang extended sympathy to the families of victims and the injured, assuring that the government remains committed to establishing lasting peace in the state. He pledged that the curfew would be subject to review as soon as the security situation witnesses improvement in the locality.
Plateau State has grappled with prolonged intercommunal crises, initially attributed to ethnicity and religion. Over time, these factors have evolved, with some attributing the conflicts to disputes between herders and farmers.
The recent surge in attacks, notably on Christmas Eve, witnessed dark-hearted assailants launching simultaneous assaults on communities in the Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas.
The attacks resulted in a tragic loss of over 200 lives, accompanied by the destruction of numerous houses and farmlands. The apparent failure of security agents to repel the assailants sparked public discontent.
Despite condemnations and promises from the government and the military, recurring aggression against the people of Plateau has drawn criticism from influential figures in Northern Nigeria, including Bishop Matthew Hassan-Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto.
Kukah sternly rebuked the government and the military for their perceived inability to protect the Plateau populace from relentless marauders.
