Finidi George has stepped down from his role as the head coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles.
The decision to resign was made by Finidi on Saturday, only a few days after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) revealed their plans to hire a foreign technical adviser. The news of his resignation was shared by former Super Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, on his social media account, X.
Ibitoye’s post read: “News just in: Finidi George @FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his @NGSuperEagles manager position.”
Finidi George, who was appointed head coach on April 29, 2024, took over the position from Jose Peseiro, whose contract had ended in February. During his brief stint as head coach, Finidi managed the Super Eagles in two crucial World Cup qualifying matches. The team drew 1-1 with South Africa and suffered a narrow 2-1 loss to Benin Republic.
His resignation comes at a critical time for the Super Eagles, as they continue their quest to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The NFF’s move to seek a foreign technical adviser suggests a shift in strategy, possibly aimed at improving the team’s performance and chances on the international stage.
