In Borno State, Nigeria, the death toll from the recent bomb attacks in Gwoza town has risen. Two more victims succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri, bringing the total number of deaths from the incident to a higher count.
Acting Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Umar Kadafur, disclosed this during a visit to the hospital on Sunday. Governor Babagana Zulum, the current governor, is away in Pakistan on a business trip with his counterparts from Borno and Adamawa states, Mai Mala Buni and Umaru Fintiri.
During his visit, Kadafur provided updates on the condition of the injured. Out of 42 victims admitted to the hospital, 16 have been discharged after receiving treatment.
However, 24 victims remain hospitalized, receiving ongoing medical care. The acting governor assured that the state government has covered all medical expenses for the victims and is committed to ensuring they receive adequate medical attention.
Kadafur emphasized that despite the tragic attack, the fight against insurgency and terrorism in the state must continue. “The state government condemns these attacks on our people,” he said. He also mentioned that the attackers exploited a lapse in vigilance among the people due to the relative peace that had been achieved recently.
He urged the community to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities or individuals to the authorities to prevent future incidents. “We must remain alert and cooperate with security personnel to avoid a repeat of such tragedies,” Kadafur added.
The acting governor’s visit was accompanied by several high-profile officials, including Senate Chief Whip Senator Ali Ndume and Ahmadu Jaha, a member of the National Assembly representing Damboa, Gwoza, and Chibok Federal Constituency, along with other government officials.
