MultiChoice, the company behind popular TV services DStv and GOtv, has announced it will revert to its previous subscription prices. This decision comes after a court ruling found the recent price increases to be unjustified, causing significant customer dissatisfaction and a notable drop in subscriptions, especially in Nigeria.
In recent months, MultiChoice had raised its subscription fees in response to economic difficulties, including high inflation and currency devaluation. However, the increased prices led to widespread backlash, with over a million subscribers cancelling their services.
Following the court’s mandate, DStv subscribers will notice a reduction in their subscription fees across various packages. The DStv Premium package, previously priced at N37,000, will now cost N29,500. Similarly, the DStv Compact+ package will see a price drop from N25,000 to N19,800.
Other packages, including DStv Compact Bouquet, DStv Confam, DStv Yanga, and DStv Padi, will also experience price reductions.
GOtv users are not left out, as they too will benefit from the price rollback. The GOtv Super+ package, which was previously N15,700, will now be available for N12,500. The GOtv Super package will see its price reduced from N9,600 to N7,600, and the GOtv Jinja package will drop from N3,300 to N2,700.
Despite the court’s decision, there is some uncertainty about whether MultiChoice will comply with an order to provide a free month of service to subscribers. The company has indicated plans to challenge this aspect of the ruling, expressing concerns about the impact on its financial sustainability.
