The Federal Government has begun implementing the Steve Oronsaye Report, which recommends restructuring various government agencies and departments.
This report was initially submitted over a decade ago and was intended to streamline government functions and reduce costs.
Although some experts believe that parts of the report are now outdated, a report by Western Post says President Bola Tinubu has decided to move forward with it to lower the cost of governance.
Three months ago, President Tinubu formed a committee led by Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), to execute the report’s recommendations within 12 weeks.
Although this timeline has passed, it is now confirmed that the committee has started working on the implementation.
A recent memo to one of the ministers, signed by Senator Akume, instructed the minister to dissolve specific agencies.
One such agency is the Nigerian Films and Video Censors Board (NFVCB). This agency will now function as a department within the Ministry of Art, Culture & Creative Economy rather than as a separate entity.
The directive, dated June 21, was part of the broader efforts by the Federal Government to restructure and consolidate various parastatals, agencies, and commissions. The goal is to streamline operations and reduce costs without causing job losses among civil servants. This was previously reported by Western Post Online in February, highlighting plans to merge, scrap, or relocate several Ministry Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
The directive mandates the Ministry of Art, Culture & Creative Economy to initiate all necessary administrative and financial procedures to dissolve the NFVCB within three weeks. Additionally, the ministry must report on the transition process within the first month of the NFVCB becoming a department.
“Accordingly, the Ministry of Art, Culture & Creative Economy is hereby mandated to initiate all necessary administrative/financial processes and procedures that will lead to the winding down of the Nigerian Film and Video Censors Board and subsequent scrapping for it to function as a Department in the Ministry within three weeks of the receipt of this communication,” the directive stated.
