As a consequence of the recent coup in Niger, several cities in the country, including Niamey, Maradi, and Zinder, are facing rolling blackouts.
Residents in these cities are experiencing power outages lasting for up to five hours, with only about an hour of electricity available during specific periods.
These power cuts are unusual for Niger, but they have been triggered by the nation’s heavy reliance on Nigeria as its primary source of electricity. The Nigerian authorities, according to Nigelec, Niger’s electricity organization, have halted the supply of electricity to their northern neighbor, leading to the current situation.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has not provided any comments or explanations regarding the power cuts in Niger. However, a BBC source revealed that the directive to cut off the power supply to Niger was issued by Nigeria’s presidency on Tuesday.
In response to the coup in Niger, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has imposed sanctions on the country. Still, it remains unclear if these measures specifically cover electrical supplies.
The coup resulted in the ousting of Niger’s democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, by his own presidential guards, who were stationed outside his palace during the incident. As a result of the coup, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, the commander of the presidential guard, assumed the role of president, while the country’s constitution was suspended.
