Former presidential aide Laolu Akande, has called upon President Bola Tinubu to reassess his administration’s policies in light of ongoing economic challenges.
He made this known on Friday while speaking on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on Channels TV.
“This week we are celebrating the June 12 Democracy Day, a more inspiring date than May 29 in our history and national aspirations. It is a commemoration of 25 straight years of uninterrupted civilian governments,” Akande stated, reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey since 1999.
Akande highlighted the leadership transitions from Presidents Obasanjo to Yar’Adua, Jonathan, Buhari, and now Tinubu, emphasizing the complexities and achievements of each tenure. He praised Obasanjo’s impact while criticizing the chaotic 2007 elections and noted Yar’Adua’s brief but decisive term. He credited Jonathan for his democratic legacy and critiqued Buhari’s mixed tenure, noting internal party critiques of his administration’s achievements.
Turning his attention to Tinubu’s current presidency, Akande referenced Tinubu’s recent presidential speech honoring democracy heroes but pointed out palpable economic hardships across the nation. “Mr. President, you must truly and urgently reconsider some of your actions and the style of your administration,” Akande urged, emphasizing the need for coherence and effective coordination in governance.
Akande expressed hope that Tinubu would deliver on the democracy dividends that have eluded past administrations since 1999. “President Tinubu still has three more years. He now carries the burden to sort Nigeria out and deliver,” Akande remarked, calling for national unity and vigilant oversight against governance trends detrimental to Nigeria’s democracy.
Akande cautioned against rising gubernatorial tyranny, citing infringements on local government autonomy, legislative independence, and succession processes. He stressed the importance of upholding democratic principles to safeguard Nigeria’s future prosperity and unity.
