The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced that it will start taking away the licenses of drivers who repeatedly break traffic rules.
Shehu Mohammed, the Corps Marshal, shared this news in Abuja on Friday during a briefing about the 2024 Eid-el Kabir Special Patrol Operations, which took place from June 14 to June 23.
He explained that the FRSC has recognized the need for everyone to work together to improve road safety. According to Mohammed, this collaboration includes various groups and agencies working as a team to control the behavior of trailer drivers and enforce rules
He highlighted some key activities, such as:
- Ensuring trailers are not used to transport people.
- Running public awareness campaigns and working with the media to spread safety messages.
- Advocating for road safety in motor parks across the country.
- Identifying and monitoring important routes, and deploying the right staff and resources to these areas.
Mohammed stated that the FRSC has had productive discussions with leaders of different transport unions and security agencies. This also includes working with State Traffic Management Agencies and the FCT Department of Road Traffic Services.
He said, “All these were done to ensure that every stakeholder, both in the public and private sector, plays a cardinal role in entrenching safety on the highways.”
He added that the FRSC is now not only enforcing traffic regulations but also prosecuting persistent offenders through Mobile Court operations in all 36 states and the FCT. He warned that more severe actions, like suspending and revoking national driver’s licenses, would follow.
