Governor Siminalayi Fubara, in an urgent move to address escalating tensions in Rivers State, called a high-level security meeting on Tuesday. The meeting, held at the Government House in Port Harcourt, brought together top security officials to discuss the recent political turmoil linked to the expiration of local government chairmen’s tenures.
The urgency of the meeting was underscored by recent unrest at local government offices, where disturbances have disrupted daily operations and heightened the state’s political climate. The governor emphasized the necessity of this gathering to strategize on maintaining order and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
Following the meeting, Governor Fubara spoke to reporters, outlining the primary objectives of the discussions. He highlighted the need for robust measures to prevent further disruptions at local government secretariats. “We must devise effective strategies to prevent further invasions of local government offices,” Fubara stated, underscoring the critical need for stability in government operations.
Another key focus of the meeting was to reinforce the importance of adhering to democratic processes during governmental transitions. Governor Fubara issued a stern warning to former council chairmen against any attempts to unlawfully reclaim their positions. “It is crucial that we respect the rule of law and the democratic transitions that uphold our governance structures,” he affirmed.
The governor also expressed concerns about potential plots by political adversaries to target his supporters, vowing to protect all residents and their properties. “Anyone attempting to make such arrests will have to confront me directly,” he declared, signaling his commitment to defending the state’s democratic integrity and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
