According to a report by The PUNCH, Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti apologized and offered ₦12,000 to the police officer he assaulted, to help repair the officer’s damaged vehicle.
The report states that the apology occurred when the officer pursued Seun Kuti to his residence in Akin Osiyemi, off Allen Avenue, Ikeja, following a collision between the musician’s car and the officer’s vehicle on the Third Mainland bridge.
According to The Punch’s report, Seun Kuti was responsible for the collision and the officer had followed him up on the issue. However, the musician exited his car and slapped the officer, as seen in a trending video. The officer subsequently reported the incident at the Police Command in Ikeja.
After the altercation, the officer followed Seun Kuti to his home in Ikeja, where the musician apologized and gave him ₦12,000 to repair the damaged vehicle. The officer then reported the incident and deposited the money at the Area F Police Command in Ikeja, while providing a written statement regarding the altercation.
Confirming Seun Kuti’s apology the Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, explained that the officer had already reported the incident and deposited the money with the Command before the video of the assault went viral on social media.
He said, “Although the investigation is still ongoing, but your correspondence is correct. Seun Kuti apologized to the officer on Saturday, and gave him ₦12,000 to repair his damaged vehicle, after the officer followed him to his house in Ikeja after the altercation.
“Fortunately, the policeman had earlier reported the incident at the Area F Police Command, and deposited the ₦12,000 with the Command, before the video of the assault went viral on social media.”
