In a recent interview on NTA’s “Conversations With History,” former President Muhammadu Buhari shared his surprise at the consistent visits he receives from people across the country, despite his intentional distance from the nation’s capital.
Buhari, who has chosen to stay away from Abuja, expressed amazement at the fact that people still charter buses to meet him. “I thought I had stayed as far away from Abuja as possible, but they still come,” he remarked during the Monday night program.
In a lighthearted moment, Buhari mentioned that he would have considered relocating to neighboring country like Niger if the borders were open, highlighting the lengths he has gone to maintain a sense of seclusion.
“I would have gone to Niger if the borders were opened,” he added.
During the interview, Buhari downplayed any nostalgia for his time in office, stating, “Miss? I don’t think I miss much.” This echoes his sentiments from December 2022, just before handing over the presidency to Bola Tinubu. At that time, Buhari had expressed doubts about missing the role, emphasizing, “I believe I’m trying my best, but still, my best is not good enough. I wonder if I am going to miss much. I think I’m being harassed.”
