In an official statement issued on Saturday, September 23, 2023, the Lagos State Council of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has definitively clarified that the person taken into custody for administering an injection to the late Mohbad was not a certified nurse.
The association, expressing its condolences over the untimely passing of the musician, Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, conveyed deep sympathy to his family and friends during this difficult period. In the same breath, they emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive investigation by the police into the matter.
The NANNM statement underlined that the arrested individual was not affiliated with NANNM and was not authorized to practice nursing in Nigeria. It firmly endorsed the ongoing inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s demise and called upon the relevant authorities to ensure a thorough examination of the case.

The statement also spotlighted the importance of professionalism in both reporting and conducting the investigation. Preliminary findings revealed that the individual in question did not possess the qualifications of a registered nurse.
The NANNM emphasized that in Nigeria, being recognized as a nurse requires successful completion of a demanding five-year Bachelor of Nursing Science program at a university, followed by a year of internship. Alternatively, one can receive training at an accredited School/College of Nursing and subsequently become registered and licensed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
Furthermore, the statement clarified that the term ‘Auxiliary Nurse’ has no standing within Nigeria’s healthcare system or legal framework. Individuals are either qualified nurses or unqualified individuals performing tasks beyond their competence.
The association urged investigative authorities and the media to exercise precision and caution in their reporting throughout the investigation, asserting that any misrepresentation of nurses and the nursing profession would not be tolerated. They called upon all media outlets that inaccurately reported the arrest of a nurse to promptly correct their narratives.
