The Federal Ministry of Works has officially ended contracts with three construction companies—Mothercat Ltd, Dantata & Sawoe Construction Ltd, and RCC Ltd—due to their failure to perform on the dualization project of the Obajana-Benin road.
This decision was announced on Monday by Orji Uchenna, the Special Adviser on Media to the Minister of Works, David Umahi.
The statement revealed that the termination was necessary because of significant delays and the companies’ failure to meet their contractual duties. Minister Umahi has ordered engineers to take over the project sites and assess the work completed so far. This will facilitate the government’s takeover from the non-performing contractors.
The contracts, worth billions of naira, were originally awarded in 2012. However, the companies abandoned the projects, leaving the road in poor condition and causing hardship for road users.
Minister Umahi emphasized that the government will not tolerate contractors who fail to deliver. He stated, “going forward, all funded but non-performing contracts shall be terminated.”
This termination is viewed as a decisive move by the Renewed Hope administration to tackle Nigeria’s infrastructure issues.
Umahi stressed the administration’s commitment to improving the country’s road network. “We will not condone any act that will hinder our progress. We are determined to change the narrative of Nigeria’s road infrastructure,” he said.
The terminated contracts include:
- Contract No. 6136 with Mothercat Ltd for the dualization of Obajana-Benin road, section II (Okene-Auchi) in Kogi/Edo State.
- Contract No. 6137 with Dantata & Sawoe Construction Ltd for the dualization of Obajana-Benin road, section III (Auchi-Ehor) in Edo State.
- Contract No. 6138 with RCC Ltd for the dualization of Obajana-Benin road, section IV (Ehor-Benin) in Edo State.
