President Bola Tinubu has taken a significant step toward enhancing the management of federal tertiary institutions in Nigeria by approving the reconstitution of their Governing Councils and Boards.
This development was disclosed in a statement released on Friday by Nnamdi Mbaeri, the Permanent Secretary for General Services in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The statement read, “His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, has approved the reconstitution of Governing Councils and Boards of Federal Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education for the effective management of Nigerian tertiary institutions across the country.”
A total of 255 individuals have been appointed to these governing bodies.
For the University of Ibadan, Chief Bisi Akande has been named Chairman of the Governing Council. His team includes Alexander Ajipe, Nelson Alapa, Ifeoma Nwankwo, and Professor Emmanuel Alo. At the University of Lagos, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) will serve as Chairman, supported by Bello Kumo, Professor Idowu Mark, Niyi Akande, and Bola Njoku.
Isa Yuguda has been appointed to lead the National Open University’s board, with members Goddy Etta, Yomi Balogun, Deborah Apah, and Hingah Biem working alongside him. Obafemi Awolowo University’s council will be chaired by Siyan Oyeweso, accompanied by Edward Sarki, Joseph Abaagu, Wahaab Owokoniran, and Abubakar Kachaalla.
Other notable appointments include Adebayo Shittu, who will chair the governing board of David Umahi University of Medicine in Ebonyi State. Muiz Banire and Senator Florence Ita Giwa have been appointed to lead the Federal University of Transportation in Katsina State and the Federal Polytechnic in Ugep, Cross River State, respectively.
