The Kano State Executive Council has decided to allocate N99,928,541.63 for the reconstruction and renovation of the wall fence and surrounding areas of the Nasarawa Emir’s palace, where the 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, currently resides.
Governor Abba Yusuf shared this update on his official Facebook page, stating it was a key decision made during the council’s 15th meeting held on Saturday.
Recently, the state government had ordered the eviction of Bayero from the mini palace in Nasarawa despite a court ruling that overturned his dethronement.
Bayero had been moved to the mini palace after Muhammad Sanusi was reinstated as the 16th Emir of Kano. However, a Federal High Court later nullified Sanusi’s reinstatement and reaffirmed Bayero as the Emir of Kano.
Despite the court’s ruling, the state government plans to appeal the decision and ordered the demolition of the Nasarawa palace. Security forces were stationed at the mini palace to prevent the demolition.
Governor Yusuf, on his Facebook page, said, “The state executive council approved the sum of ₦99,928,541.63 for the reconstruction and renovation of the defective wall fence and surroundings at the mini palace.”
In addition to the palace renovations, the council approved N81,621,546.76 for the renovation and upgrade of the D-Ward at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital to establish a Sickle-Cell Care Unit.
They also sanctioned N770,858,450.39 for constructing a Post-Midwifery Institute in Gezawa Local Government Area and N57,066,422.52 to complete the College of Nursing and Midwifery in Madobi Local Government Area.
Furthermore, N447,621,640.79 was earmarked to pay excess workload allowances for lecturers at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology Wudil and Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano.
This decision comes after the Academic Staff Union of Universities in these institutions went on a two-week warning strike to highlight issues such as non-reinstatement of the governing council, non-payment of outstanding entitlements, and underfunding of the universities.
