The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has made a significant decision regarding the conditions for presidential election victory. They have dismissed a petition claiming that a presidential candidate must secure 25% of the votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to be declared the winner.
Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani, who chairs the tribunal, delivered this ruling on September 6, 2023. He emphasized that the FCT does not hold any special status and is on an equal footing with all other states in Nigeria.
This ruling stems from a petition filed by the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi. They contested the victory of President Bola Tinubu, asserting that Tinubu should be ineligible for the presidency because he didn’t meet the 25% vote threshold in the FCT.
