Former President Olusegun Obasanjo visited First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu in Lagos on Monday to celebrate the Sallah holiday. The visit was confirmed by Busola Kukoyi, the First Lady’s spokesperson, who shared the news and a photograph of the meeting on social media.
In her post, Kukoyi explained that Obasanjo’s visit was a gesture of goodwill to mark the Sallah celebration.
She wrote, “Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, after receiving the former President who came felicitating on the Sallah celebration on Monday, 17th June.”
The meeting between the two leaders drew attention as it came shortly after Obasanjo’s recent criticism of the Tinubu administration.
On May 27th, Obasanjo had publicly commented on the government’s handling of the removal of the fuel subsidy and the decision to float the naira. While he acknowledged the necessity of these policies, he criticized their implementation, suggesting that they were not carried out effectively.
In addition to his economic concerns, Obasanjo had also voiced his disapproval of Nigeria’s response to the coup in the Republic of Niger. He expressed his views at a colloquium in Abuja titled “Nigeria’s Development: Navigating the Way Out of the Current Economic Crisis and Insecurity.”
Despite these critical remarks, Obasanjo’s visit to the First Lady appeared to be a cordial and celebratory occasion. Both leaders were seen smiling in the photo shared by Kukoyi, suggesting a moment of unity and shared festivity during the Sallah holiday.
