The Niger State Police Command on Sunday said it thwarted a robbery attempt in Iwa village via Gawu-Babangida in Gurara local government area of the state and recovered one AK-47 rifle at a mining site.
Wasiu Abiodun, the command’s spokesman, he said the police responded swiftly to a distress call on Saturday and engaged the armed robbers in a gun battle.

The spokesman explained that the hoodlums escaped the scene after several hours through a nearby forest. He believes that some of them sustained gunshot injuries during the battle.
Subsequently, the police team recovered; AK-47, one empty magazine and bags of Indian Hemp from the attackers. Also, the victims were safely rescued.
He stated, “after we received the information, the Police tactical team attached to Gawu-Babangida Division and vigilante men were mobilized to the scene, and the hoodlums were engaged in a gun duel”.
“Due to the superior firepower of the Police team, the hoodlums escaped from the scene through the nearby forest, while some of them were also believed to have escaped with gunshot injuries”.
“In a follow-up to the gun duel, the Police team thoroughly combed the nearby forest and in the process, one AK-47 rifle with one empty magazine was recovered from the forest”.
The command was able to apprehend two suspects with sixteen bags of Indian Hemp in the Mokwa Local Government Area of the state.
Auta Umar Saidu, 25, and Mohammed Bala, 52, were arrested in Muwo village while attempting to ferry away sixteen bags of suspected Indian Hemp to Ndayako village.
