Students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) on Tuesday launched a protest over the hike in school fees by the institution.
The students took to the streets of their campus, marching towards it’s administrative building. The students barricaded the entrance to the institution with members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) leading the agitation for the school authorities to reverse the increment.

The angered students displayed various placards with different inscriptions to indicate their demands, the students are asking for an immediate reversal considering the economic hardship currently experienced in the country.
The varsity’s school fees and other charges were hiked from N40,000 to N160,00 per academic session for returning students, while N200,000 for new entrants.
The school’s SUG president Longmun Dakon said, “As a union, we have been having serious engagements with the university authorities before it was not brought to N110,000”.
He said the hike in fees is “unaffordable to students. It is on the high side and of course, a lot of students would drop out of school”.
Amid the protest, the school’s Dean of Students Affairs Prof Christopher Piwuna assured the students that the fee hike is of concern to the authorities and is receiving their attention.
“Our engagements have not yielded the results that you want. That is clear. But for us, we believe that discussions will always continue,” he added.
UNIJOS, with its hike, joins a growing list of federal universities that have raised their fees in recent months.
