Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the Feb 25 election, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari and Chief Justice of Nigeria Olukayode Ariwoola, to boycott the inauguration ceremony of President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023.
Baba-Ahmed made this known while speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Friday night. He insists that swearing-in a ticket that has not yet met constitutional requirements is tantamount to ending democracy.
Datti-Ahmed said the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, was reckless to have issued a certificate of return to Tinubu, describing the process that produced Tinubu as President-elect as “unconstitutional.”
Baba-Ahmed said, “Swearing in a ticket that has not met the constitutional requirements of the constitution is ending democracy. And I’m repeating it, whoever does not meet the constitutional requirements must never be sworn in.
“I’m repeating, swearing in anybody who does not meet the constitutional requirements of our country, you are engaging in an unconstitutional act. Mr. President, do not hold that inauguration. CJN, your lordship, do not partake in unconstitutionality.”
Baba-Ahmed had in April said if Bola Tinubu, ‘winner’ of the 2023 presidential election is sworn in, it will amount to an end to democracy.
Baba-Ahmed also insisted during the interview that the Supreme Court’s ruling on the matter should be in favour of the Labour Party, a school of thought Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, had described as fascist.
