The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN), has stated that the university will not suspend its academic activities due to the elections, which are only a few weeks away.
This was said by Egbewole during his first media interview with journalists in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.
He went on to say that, while the University is not opposed to students participating in elections, virtual classrooms and voting can coexist because students can engage from wherever they are.
“We won’t suspend our lecturers for voting. UNILORIN is digitized”, he said .
He said in the last 100 days of his assumption as vice chancellor, the university under his regime had attracted N500 TetFund grants for hostel accommodation for its students, another N400m for broad band from Ministry of Communications and N200m grant for ICT.
He added that some staff of the institution have attracted a N100m grants through their research works for the university, adding that the university “has patented 18- 20 products of its research works”
Egbewole announced plans by the university to complete the its long initiated Tanke – Unilorin rail transportation system to ease the transport hiccups being faced by the students.
“The university is engaging the Embassy of China” to handle the project which according to him had been initiated about 10 to 15 years ago.
In addition, he said the university under his regime was planning an “electric bus transportation system at the micro level” to ensure students have a smooth ride .
Egbewole said the project became imperative in view of the growing population of about 60, 000- 70,000 people resident in Tanke area with at least 18- 20,000 people being transported in and out of the institution daily.
