Chelsea did a complete squad overhaul in the summer of 2023. A lot of new faces arrived as the club decided to let go of some of its beloved players.
Now, several months into the 2023-24 season, we’re starting to see how some Chelsea stars who were sold to a new club are performing.
Let’s take a closer look at three players who are yet to find their form this season.
1. Mateo Kovacic
Mateo Kovacic, the Croatian midfield maestro, spent five glorious seasons at Chelsea. He was a crucial part of the squad, contributing to their successes. Last summer, he made the switch to Manchester City for £25 million as part of the squad overhaul.
Expectations were high for Kovacic, given his familiarity with the Premier League. However, the transition hasn’t been smooth. He’s played ten games for Manchester City but is yet to make the same impact he did at Chelsea. The Cityzens have already lost two matches, raising questions about his influence on the team.
2 Mason Mount
Mason Mount, a young English talent, bid farewell to Chelsea this summer. He had grown from the club’s youth ranks to become a standout player. His move to Manchester United for £55 million was a big deal, and he even inherited the iconic no. 7 jersey.
Unfortunately, Mount has struggled to find the back of the net for Manchester United. He has one assist to his name but hasn’t lived up to the high expectations placed upon him since joining the Red Devils.
3. Kai Havertz Back in 2019, Kai Havertz was a sensation in the Bundesliga while playing for Bayer Leverkusen. Chelsea splashed £75.8 million to bring him to Stamford Bridge. He had moments of brilliance but didn’t quite live up to his potential.
Arsenal took a chance on Havertz in the summer, paying £65 million for his services. However, the German midfielder is yet to find his rhythm. After 14 games, he has scored just one goal and provided one assist.
The question remains: can these former Chelsea stars rediscover their form and justify their high-profile moves to new clubs?
