Here are some interesting facts about tomorrow’s gubernatorial and Houses of Assembly elections that you might not know. QUEST TIMES brings you the 7 things you should know about polls:
- Governorship elections for 28 of Nigeria’s 36 states will be held in 2023.
- Only eight states – Osun, Ekiti, Edo, Anambra, Bayelsa, Imo, Ondo, and Kogi – hold off-cycle governorship elections on different dates.
- Elections for Houses of Assembly will be held in all 36 states.The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will hold no governorship or House of Assembly elections as it does not have a governor. Under the 1999 Constitution, the president and National Assembly serve as its “governor” and legislature respectively
- On Saturday, 11 governors will be standing for re-election in: Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Lagos, Nasarawa, Kwara, Ogun, Oyo, Yobe, and Zamfara states.
- The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will announce the results of the gubernatorial elections in each state capital.
- Senator Aisha Binani is the first female governorship candidate to run under a major party’s banner since 2015.
- Only 25 women out of 416 contestants successfully filed governorship applications, according to INEC. This is a significant decrease from 2019, when 70 women ran for governor.
