Facebook owner Meta is launching a new app called Threads to compete with Twitter.
The app will be available on Thursday and is already available for pre-order on the Apple App Store.
Threads will be linked to Instagram and will feature a text-based conversation format. Meta describes it as a platform where communities can come together to discuss various topics.
The app appears to have a similar interface to Twitter, with screengrabs showing a dashboard resembling the popular social media platform.
The launch of Threads is seen as another move in the ongoing rivalry between Mark Zuckerberg, the head of Meta, and Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter. Last month, the two agreed to a physical fight, although it’s unclear if they were serious about it.

Twitter has also made changes recently, announcing that its user dashboard TweetDeck will become a paid service. Musk has been actively pushing Twitter’s subscription service, Twitter Blue, and recently limited the number of tweets users can see. Meanwhile, Meta’s Threads app is expected to be free with no restrictions on post visibility.
However, it will collect data from users’ phones, including location data, purchases, and browsing history.
Threads is considered a significant threat to Twitter, as Meta has a history of successfully implementing features inspired by other platforms, such as Reels (similar to TikTok) and Stories (similar to Snapchat).
With Meta’s vast resources and connection to Instagram, Threads has the potential to attract disenchanted Twitter users and establish itself as a genuine alternative.
