Cameroon’s goalkeeper André Onana finds himself on the sidelines once more as his nation takes on The Gambia in the Africa Cup of Nations group stage.
After missing the opening match against Guinea due to arriving late from a Premier League clash with Tottenham, Onana secured a spot in the starting eleven for the second game against Senegal, which ended in a 3-1 loss.
However, Onana’s performance in the Senegal match drew criticism, leading to his exclusion from the starting lineup against The Gambia. Fabrica Ondoa, who started in the 1-1 draw against Guinea, continues as the goalkeeper for today’s fixture.
This recent benching echoes previous issues for Onana, who faced disciplinary action during the 2022 World Cup when coach Rigobert Song left him out of the squad for a match against Serbia.
Additionally, Onana had retired from international soccer following a disagreement with Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o, who serves as the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot). Despite these challenges, Onana later returned to the Cameroon camp.
