The Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria, APCON, has reacted to the viral Easter message of Sterling Bank comparing the biblical Christ with Agege Bread.
Quest Times earlier reported that Sterling Bank in an email forwarded to its customers over the weekend, wrote; “Like Agege Bread, He (Jesus) arose!”
Following this, some netizens who found the message offensive took to social media to blast the commercial bank over its insensitive post. Though the bank has apologised, many still find their apology “unacceptable and irresponsible” considering the tone of the message.

Reacting, the APCON through a statement signed Monday, by its Registrar/Chief Executive, Olalekan Fadolapo, described the message as a “distasteful advertisement”.
According to him, “the distasteful advertisement was neither submitted nor approved for exposure by the Advertising Standards Panel (ASP), the statutory Panel charged with the responsibility of ensuring that advertisements conform with the prevailing laws of the federation as well as with the code of ethics of Advertising in Nigeria”.
The agency, therefore, assured of its plan to sanction the bank for the exposure of such an offensive advertisement.
