Xavi Hernandez and Barcelona’s bond appeared strained earlier this year, with the coach contemplating departure. However, in a surprising turn of events, they have decided to maintain their partnership, citing a need for stability.
“In January I saw the best thing was for me to leave, but now I see it differently,” Xavi stated at a press conference Thursday, expressing his change of heart.
President Joan Laporta emphasized the importance of continuity, stating, “The club needed stability, not drastic decision-making,” despite the team’s failure to meet its season objectives.
The decision follows Barcelona’s recent setbacks, including a Clasico defeat by Real Madrid and elimination from the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain, leaving them without a shot at silverware this season.
While Barcelona did achieve some successes, such as their notable Champions League victory against PSG, Xavi’s tenure has faced challenges, including key setbacks like Ronald Araujo’s red card and disputed referee decisions.
“It’s in our hands now,” remarked Xavi, reflecting on the team’s progress despite setbacks.
Although Barcelona explored alternative coaching options, none seemed suitable. Reserve team coach Rafa Marquez lacked conviction, and other potential candidates like Hansi Flick, Julian Nagelsmann, and Thomas Tuchel were either unavailable or financially unfeasible.
