The Federal Government of Nigeria through the National Universities Commission (NUC) has ordered Vice-Chancellors to re-open universities and allow students to resume lectures.
This is coming on the heels of the nationwide strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
In a letter signed by the Director, Finance and Accounts of the NUC, Sam Onazi, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof Abubakar Rasheed, ASUU was told to resume work immediately.

“Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures; Restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses,” the letter partly reads.
It would be recalled that the National Industrial Court of Nigeria last Wednesday ordered ASUU to call off its strike.
ASUU has been on strike since February 14 due to the federal government’s failure to meet its demands, including on issues relating to the funding of universities and lecturers’ salaries and allowances.
Several meetings between ASUU and the FG have ended in a deadlock.
