Liz Truss has resigned as Prime Minister of the UK. She announced her decision outside N0 10 Downing Street.
Truss said she could not deliver on her mandate and had notified the King that she was resigning as Tory leader.
By her resignation, Truss has become the shortest-serving Prime Minister in British history. She lasted 45 days in Downing Street.
In front of dozens of reporters, Truss said she came into office at a time of “great economic and international instability.”
Her seven-week reign came under renewed pressure after the Home Secretary who was implementing her tax cut and mini-budget policy that led to economic chaos, resigned.
The second shortest serving PM was George Canning, who served for 119 days after dying in 1827.
Truss’ stepping down arrives on the heels of dramatic scenes in the House of Commons last night over a vote on fracking.
47-year-old Liz Truss succeeded Boris Johnson as UK Prime Minister on September 5, 2022.
