In response to the recent decision by the Vatican allowing blessings for same-sex couples, the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) has clarified that the Church’s fundamental teachings on marriage remain steadfast.
As gathered by Quest Times, the CSN emphasized that, according to the Church, marriage is still regarded as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman.
While acknowledging the Pope’s directive, an anonymous CSN official, speaking on behalf of the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of Nigeria, asserted, “It’s crucial to reiterate that this does not change the Church’s teaching on the sacrament of marriage. The Church’s view on same-sex marriage remains unaltered.”
The official further explained that allowing blessings for same-sex couples in specific situations is a step towards recognizing the diversity of individuals’ lives and experiences, while maintaining the core beliefs of the Church.
He added, “This move emphasizes that the Church’s role is to guide and bless, rather than judge, its members.”
Clarifying the role of blessings, the official stated, “The Church is a place of refuge, a place of love, and a place of blessing for all.”
However, he emphasized that blessings for same-sex couples should not be equated with the sacrament of marriage, nor should they be incorporated into civil unions or wedding ceremonies.
“We encourage all to see this development as an opportunity to foster greater understanding, compassion, and unity within the Church and the broader community,” he concluded.
