Popular cross-dresser and social media personality, Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, famously known as Bobrisky, has taken legal action against his conviction on four counts of Naira abuse.
Through his lawyer, Bimbo Kusanu, he filed a notice of appeal challenging the six-month imprisonment sentence handed down by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos.
Bobrisky, known for his flamboyant lifestyle, pleaded guilty on April 5, following charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for Naira abuse.
Now, he’s requesting the court to overturn the sentence and impose a fine of N50,000 on each count instead.
In his appeal, Bobrisky argues that the trial court’s imposition of the maximum sentence was excessive, given his lack of prior criminal convictions and the discretion allowed by the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).
He emphasizes his positive conduct, including cooperation during the investigation, and claims that the punishment doesn’t fit the offense.
Bobrisky points out discrepancies in the trial court’s reasoning, particularly regarding the intention behind Naira abuse laws and the consideration of foreign opinions on the matter. He believes that the court’s failure to exercise discretion judiciously led to a miscarriage of justice.
