Reactions have continued to trail the suspension of Abdulrasheed Bawa as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and his subsequent invitation by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The Quest Times reports that Bawa’s suspension by President Bola Tinubu was announced on Wednesday, June 14, 2023. Following his suspension he was invited by the DSS in relation “to some investigative activities concerning him.”
Bawa’s suspension comes on the heels of the suspension and arrest of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, who was picked up the DSS following his suspension.
Following the development, Nigerians wondered who would be next. Some dismissed the move as more of a power play than a fight against corruption, while others noted how no EFCC chairman completed his tenure due to one form of controversy or allegation.
Here are some reactions gathered by The Quest Times
@Sports_Doctor2 For those jumping up that Tinubu has suspended EFCC Chairman, Bawa. Tinubu that’s going after everyone that messed with him one after the other, systematically dismantling them. He wants to fight corruption and Hadiri is still a free man, the senator and his wife judge is still flexing Una too dey funny me for this country.

@DanielRegha Tinubu suspending the EFCC Chairman means nothing; Bawa was incompetent but let’s not pretend like Tinubu is suspending anyone to fight corruption or fix Nigeria. There’s ulterior motive. If Tinubu & this administration are serious, they should sack the INEC chairman (Yakubu).
@ENIBOY And the EFCC curse continues. Every chairman that has ever sat on that seat, left disgracefully without completing their tenure from Nuhu Ribadu to Farida Waziri, Lamorde, Magu and now Bawa.
Off the internet for some hours only to find out hurricane Tinubu has struck again. Nigerians are truly witnessing a town hall different. Bawa, the EFCC Chair is gone with the wind of Bala Blu.

@VillageParrot Bawa made EFCC look like SARS. Bursting into hotels and apartments like NURTW louts.
@shehu_mahdi SUSPENSION OF EFCC CHAIRMAN: SCRATCH MY BACK, I SCRATCH YRS. Just recall how current Senate leadership emerged & indeed the its old and new members & you will understand that Removal of the EFCC Bawa must have been one of the many behind the scene deals. Anti-corruption indeed.
@firstladyship All Abdulrasheed Bawa did was go after Yahoo Boys. Yahoo Men move around with DSS escort. They have access to the Villa. Why are Madam Palliatives & Hadi Sirika free? Suspending EFCC Chairman now? it came too late. You should have announced his suspension like Subsidy removal.
The Nigerian structure makes the President a monarch. Now, all anti-corruption agencies are under the control of the mafia.
This is why no one in EFCC, ICPC or the Police can investigate & convict anyone in defiance of the President.
Bawa’s removal is just a change of baton.

@chymaker The suspension of Bawa is suspicious at the moment but there should be an independent investigation of EFCC and her modus operandi It’s not only the leadership but the entire Commission is a deeply corrupt and destructive Organisation
@novieverest Bawa left his job as the EFCC chairman which is to go after criminals to be advising poor people. He thought that if he leaves politicians, they will leave him. Lessons.
@el_bonga I don’t think there is any EFCC Chairman that enjoyed a smooth ride to the very end. From Ribadu, Lamorde, Farida Waziri, Magu, Bawa etc. All of them were either removed or suspended. That office is one of the most challenging offices to man in Nigeria.
