The National Judicial Council (NJC) has put forth the recommendation for the appointment of 11 justices to the Supreme Court. The decision was reached at the 104th meeting of the council held in Abuja on Wednesday, as disclosed in a statement by the apex court’s Director of Information, Soji Oye.
Upon approval by President Bola Tinubu and subsequent confirmation by the Senate, the recommended candidates will be sworn in. This move is set to bring the Supreme Court to its full complement of 21 justices, aligning with the constitutional provision.
The justices recommended for appointment to the Supreme Court include:
- Hon. Justice Jummai Hannatu Sankey, OFR
- Hon. Justice Chidiebere Nwaoma Uwa
- Hon. Justice Chioma Egondu Nwosu-Iheme
- Hon. Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani
- Hon. Justice Moore Aseimo A. Adumein
- Hon. Justice Obande Festus Ogbuinya
- Hon. Justice Stephen Jonah Adah
- Hon. Justice Habeeb Adewale O. Abiru
- Hon. Justice Jamilu Yammama Tukur
- Hon. Justice Abubakar Sadiq Umar
- Hon. Justice Mohammed Baba Idris
The NJC, in its final meeting for the year, also recommended the appointment of Justice Mohammed Ramat to the Court of Appeal, along with six heads of courts and 26 other judicial officers. The Heads of Court recommended will assume their positions upon approval by their respective State Governors and subsequent confirmation by their State Houses of Assembly.
