There are clear indications that the Director/CEO of the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit Mr. ModibboTukur is seeking for political cover arising from widespread allegations of misconduct that have been reported about him recently.
Informed sources said he has become so desperate that he tried to schedule a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Paris but was turned down by Chief of Staff Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, who is reportedly looking into the situation right now.
According to the source, although “Gbajabiamila had warned him to keep his mouth shut while the allegations against him is reviewed administratively and this was why the NFIU boss suddenly asked Daily Trust to delete a rejoinder that he had written to one of Quest Times expose on his conduct.”
After the NFIU boss had reached out to the former Speaker even before he was named as the President’s Chief of Staff, he still felt the need to track the President and attempted to see him away in Paris hoping there may be a better chance abroad to see the President.
But sources said it is not only the President’s Chief of Staff that is aware of the matter but also the Code of Conduct Bureau Chairman Prof. Mohammed Isah, a law professor, who is currently reviewing the matter as we speak.
Isah is known in government circles as a silent but widely respected anti-corruption fighter who had asked the NFIU boss to join the Bureau in ensuring a more effective framework in the FG fight against corruption.
Isah had requested NFIU to supply financial intelligence on public officials based on their asset declaration in order to crosscheck claims made on the declaration. But authoritative sources confirmed to Quest Times that instead, Modibbo sat on the request and later started interacting with some of the public officials in a manner the Code of Conduct Bureau found to be compromising.
The Bureau’s aims and objectives are “to establish and maintain a high standard of morality in the conduct of government business and to ensure that the actions and behaviour of public officers conform to the highest standards of public morality and accountability.”
Since the Code of Conduct Bureau’s request, Moddibo had picked a conflict with Prof. Isah accusing him rather than collaborating with the Bureau, a top official of the Bureau revealed in a chat.
The source said the Bureau is also carefully reviewing the conduct of the NFIU boss.
As at the time this report is being filed, it is unclear to Quest Times the current decision by the President’s chief of Staff Gbajabiamila on this matter but we will update as time goes on.
“Recall that the Tinubu administration started off on a clean slate to expose corrupt practices, a move many commended to be a breath of fresh air.
“Nigeria can only move forward if carrots and evil seeds are not swept under the carpet,” the source said .
