Femi Fani-Kayode, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has praised Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai for his position on the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) Naira policy.
The CBN had set February 10 as the deadline for the old notes to remain in circulation, following a redesign of the nation’s currency notes.
Nevertheless, several governors elected on the platform of the APC, took the Federal Government to the Supreme Court in an attempt to prevent the deadline from standing.
Responding to an ex parte suit brought by the governments of Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara States, the Supreme Court halted the CBN’s ban on old notes on February 8 and deferred hearing on the matter on Wednesday, February 15.
In a nationwide broadcast on Thursday, President Muhammadu Buhari authorized the CBN to reissue the old N200 notes, although the old N500 and N1000 notes were declared illegal.
El-Rufai, on the other hand, contradicted the president in a nationwide broadcast, stating that the old N500 and N1000 notes were still legal tender in his state and warning that Buhari’s directive violated the Supreme Court judgment.
He accused the president of working to sabotage the candidacy of the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.
Reacting, FFK, a former Minister of Aviation, described the governor as the hero of the moment.
According to a series of tweets on his official page, FFK who is currently being interrogated by the Department of State Services (DSS) over a controversial tweet, said Tinubu will win the election despite the alleged conspiracies against him.
He wrote, “The hero of the moment is @elrufai. He has spoken truth and @fkeyamo has confirmed that truth most eloquently and courageously on Channels TV’s ‘Politics Today’ last night.”
