President Bola Tinubu has ordered a thorough inquiry into the reported N585m scandal involving the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
Vowing to take decisive action against any wrongdoing, the President aims to address concerns raised by various groups and individuals.
The controversy centres around a leaked memo from Minister Betta Edu, instructing the Accountant-General to transfer N585m to the private account of a project accountant, Bridget Oniyelu.
While Edu claimed the funds were intended for vulnerable groups in specific states, allegations of financial irregularities have fueled public outrage.
In response, the President, through the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Sunday, emphasized the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
Denying the payment authorization, the Accountant-General asserted that her office did not fulfill the minister’s request.
Acknowledging public concerns, the government assured a thorough and unbiased investigation to uncover the truth.
Quest Times further reports that the statement emphasized the importance of relying on verified information from the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, urging patience as the inquiry progresses.
President Tinubu affirmed his dedication to ensuring public funds are utilized effectively, signaling a commitment to addressing any breaches identified during the investigation.
“Only accurate details will be shared with the public. The ministry is committed to providing timely updates to keep Nigerians informed about the progress of the investigation,” the statement read in part.
