City captain Kyle Walker shared insights into Phil Foden’s celebratory routine, labeling it the “sniper” celebration, following the English talent’s impressive performance, securing a 3-1 victory against Manchester United in the derby clash on Sunday.
Foden, the 23-year-old midfielder, has incorporated the nickname into his goal celebrations, showcasing it 18 times this season.
“It’s basically a joke from the lads,” explained Foden. “They say that I shoot a lot in training and they call me the sniper. It’s my celebration now – I like to do it. I’ve been practicing in training a lot of different finishes and that’s one – coming inside and shooting. I’m delighted today it paid off.”
Reflecting on the game’s dynamics, Foden emphasized the importance of composure after conceding and credited the manager’s halftime guidance for the team’s resurgence: “We did in the second-half and I’m happy to help the team with the two goals I scored.”
When asked about his preferred goal from the derby, Foden singled out the first one, citing its quality and execution: “The first one, for sure. It’s a nice finish – I came in onto my left and struck the ball really well.”
Foden’s journey from the bench to becoming a pivotal figure in City’s lineup exemplifies his remarkable growth. Last season, he often found himself among the substitutes, but this season, he has flourished, cementing his place in the starting XI.
With 10 assists to complement his goal-scoring prowess, Foden has become an indispensable asset for City.
