The ex-Speaker of the Ogun House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, along with two key officials, Dayo Samuel and Adeyemo Adedeji, stood before a Federal High Court in Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, on Monday.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought the trio to court, accusing them of misusing public funds totaling N2.5 billion during Oluomo’s tenure as Speaker in 2022.
Oluomo, ousted last week by 18 out of 26 lawmakers, faces allegations ranging from financial misappropriation to highhandedness and poor leadership.
Despite labeling his removal as illegal, Oluomo has initiated legal proceedings at the state high court to contest his impeachment.
Upon their appearance on Monday, it was noted that the counsel for the EFCC could not attend court proceedings.
Consequently, Justice Agatha Okeke adjourned the case to February 29 and March 1.
Quest Times recalls that the EFCC had previously arrested and charged Oluomo in September 2022 for allegedly diverting N2.5 billion from the Assembly.
This legal action also involved the Clerk of the House, Taiwo Adeyemo, and the Director of Finance, Oladayo Samuel.
The charges centered on accusations of forging receipts and signatures to redirect significant sums of money from the legislative house.
Despite pleading not guilty, the accused were granted bail, with an obligation to submit their travel documents to the court registry.
