Social media users on Monday slammed Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu for giving brand new vehicles to the 26 members of the State House of Assembly.
The vehicles were presented to the lawmakers at the government house in Alagbaka, Akure, on Monday.
Secretary to the State Government, Princess Oladunni Odu presented the vehicles on behalf of the Governor.
State Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Engr. Ade Adetimehin was also in attendance.
Speaking on behalf of the Governor, Princess Odu stated that the vehicles were procured to ease the legislative duties of members of the 10th Assembly.
She noted that Governor Akeredolu has consistently emphasised on the importance of all stakeholders and State actors to collaborate as “One Administration” for the overall development of the State.
The SSG added that the Governor remains committed to the well-being of every Arm of Government and the people of the State in general.
Chairman of the APC in the State, Engr. Adetimehin, hailed Governor Akeredolu for finding it imperative to procure official vehicles for the lawmakers.
While stressing that the party in the State is proud of the Governor, the APC Chairman urged the lawmakers to continue to support him for the overall development and progress of the State.
Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji expressed gratitude to the Governor for the gesture, describing it as a significant accomplishment.
He explained that the vehicles would aid the lawmakers in fulfilling their legislative responsibilities and strengthen the relationship between the Assembly and the other Arms of Government.
Shortly after Akeredolu who is receiving medical attention in Germany the vehicles on his official Facebook page, many of those who commented described his gestures as misplaced priority, saying the people of Ondo who are suffering the effects of the removal of fuel subsidy need the vehicles more than the lawmakers.
Others claimed Akeredolu gave the lawmakers the vehicles as a bribe so he will not be impeached for being incapacitated.
Marcus Olaosebikan Olalekan wrote “I don’t know how those in power sleep seeing how Nigerians are wallowing in abject poverty and suffering. Money being paid into accounts of those who need no welfare while those who need welfare are left unattended to. Roads to villages are dead traps. No light and good water.Yet these politicians in politics and offices are completely indifferent to the plights of the poor. I do not think Nigerians’ interest matters to those in power and positions of responsibility. Go to villages and see how our people are suffering. No amenities to better lives”.
Another Ondo resident, Adenugba Olusola wrote “Politics has become a lucrative business in Nigeria ,so we have this much in the state and workers and the citizens are suffering ,they should remember that God almighty is watching He never sleep nor slumber He shall reward everyone according to their work, vanity upon vanity”.
Adedoyin Alimi wrote “I guess baba is security his office so he won’t be impeached. These funds would have been better used in offsetting salaries of civil servants and pay retirees their pension. People of Ondo State. It’s well with you all o”.
Samson Adejumola wrote “Children of the Masses are there in various schools of higher learning, no scholarship, no bursary. People are dying in the hospital no drugs, this odd hour Mr Governor the people of Ondo state are suffering and the hardship is taken toll on everyone…. Please jeep is too costly,the money can be used to fix a developmental projects in various community. No employment for the the youths, what is our offence in Ondo state?”.
Daniel Ini- Thompson wrote “Mr Governor what have you done to relieve the pains of the people of Ondo state in these difficult times??Reckless and unreasonable spending if you ask me”.
