In the latest twist to the Ataga murder trial, the proceedings hit another roadblock on Tuesday.
The trial, involving Chidinma Ojukwu accused of murdering Super TV CEO Micheal Ataga, could not proceed due to the absence of a crucial prosecution witness, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Quest Times learned that DSP Olusegun Bamidele, the ninth prosecution witness, was unable to testify due to his ill health.
Taking place at a Lagos High Court in Tafawa Balewa Square, the trial involves Ojukwu facing nine charges, including murder, theft, and forgery.
Alongside her, her sister Chioma Egbuchu and Adedapo Quadri are also facing charges.
Moreover, this is the second time the trial has faced a setback; on December 7, the proceedings were similarly halted due to DSP Bamidele’s reported illness.
On Tuesday, Mr. Babatunde Busari, Quadri’s counsel, informed the court that the witness had not fully recovered, prompting a request for an adjournment.
Responding to the request, Justice Yetunde Adesanya agreed to adjourn the case until January 24, 2024, to allow for the witness’ recovery and continuation of the trial.
It is worth noting that Ojukwu, Quadri, and Egbuchu were arraigned on October 12, 2021, by the Lagos State Government.
The charges range from conspiracy, murder, and stabbing for Ojukwu and Quadri, while Egbuchu faces accusations of stealing an iPhone 7 belonging to the late Ataga.
