The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has released results for the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The examination body released the result on Monday.
Patrick Areghan, Head of Nigeria’s Office (HNO) of WAEC, said out of a total of 1,613,733 candidates that sat for the examination, 1,361,608 candidates, representing 84.38 per cent, obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects with or without English Language or Mathematics.

However, despite the good news, a lot of people has been noticed something strange about their results. On checking the portal, some students were surprised to see “INDEBTED” instead of their grades and has been wondering what it was all about.
However, this is not a cause to worry. The INDEBTED you see on your portal means that your state government is owing WAEC some money which is why the results hasn’t been released.
In a press briefing at the WAEC National Office in Yaba, on Monday, August 7, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) announced that candidates from eight states will not receive their 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results due to outstanding debts.
The organization expressed deep concern as these unsettled payments for various services are posing significant challenges to its operations. Mr. Patrick Areghan, the National Officer of WAEC, responded to inquiries about the states with debts, stating that around eight states are yet to clear their dues to WAEC. He refrained from disclosing the names of all the states, citing that some are in the process of making payments.
So, if you recently checked your WAEC result and saw “INDEBTED” instead of your grades, don’t worry. It’s not your fault as your state government is working on making payments for the results to be released.
