Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has taken a decisive step by ordering the withdrawal of all policemen assigned to former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.
This move follows Bello’s entanglement in legal issues and his placement on the Nigerian Immigration Service watchlist.
The police directive stressed the necessity of strict compliance with the withdrawal of security personnel from Shekarau’s vicinity.
The document read in part, “IG has ordered the withdrawal of all policemen attached to His Excellency and former Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello.
“Acknowledge compliance and treat with utmost importance. Please, above, for your information and strict compliance.”
The decision stems from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) pursuit of Bello in connection to an N80.2 billion money laundering case. The EFCC had earlier declared him wanted and secured a warrant of arrest from a Federal High Court in Abuja.
In tandem with the police withdrawal, the Nigerian Immigration Service has placed Bello on its watchlist, instructing border officials to arrest and refer him to the Director of Investigation upon sighting at any entry or exit point.
Efforts by the EFCC to apprehend Bello were thwarted by the current Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, and his security detail, who escorted Bello away from his residence.
