A candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Saturday’s Enugu East Senatorial District election, Oyibo Chukwu, has been killed few hours to the general election.
It was learnt that Chukwu was killed at Amechi, Awkunanaw local government area of Enugu while returning from a campaign rally.
He was murdered alongside five of his supporters.
The killers were also said to have burnt him and his supporters who were with him inside his car.
Confirming the incident was the governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Chijioke Edeoga, who noted that his party members are being targeted for assassination by political parties which felt threatened by the rise of the Labour Party in the state.
“It is true that our senatorial candidate for Enugu East senatorial district for Saturday’s election has been killed. They (gunmen) shot him and five others and set them ablaze.
“Our party members are being targeted for assassination by political parties that felt threatened by the rise of the Labour Party in the state and are afraid they may lose the Saturday’s election.”
It was also learned that the APC governorship candidate in the state, Uche Nnaji was also attacked at the spot where the Labour candidate was killed.
The Enugu police command is yet to react to the incident, which Edeoga insists is politically motivated.
