The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced that the fate of Jose Peseiro, the head coach of the men’s national team, Super Eagles, will be determined during the African Nations Cup scheduled for January 2024.
The development was confirmed by the General Secretary of the NFF, Sanusi Mohammed, during a conversation with Promptnewsonline.
Mohammed explained that Peseiro’s performance would be evaluated after the Nations Cup, following which discussions would commence regarding his future. He emphasized that the immediate focus of the NFF is to prepare the team for a successful campaign in Ivory Coast.
“His performance would also be assessed after the Nations Cup before opening a fresh discussion with him. Our focus now is to prepare the team for a super outing in Ivory Coast.”
He added,” If the federation is to renew his contract, it must be a collective decision taken by the Executive Board.”

Regarding the possibility of renewing Peseiro’s contract, Mohammed clarified that such a decision would require the collective agreement of the Executive Board.
He dismissed the rumors suggesting that the NFF had already extended Peseiro’s contract, stating that no meetings had taken place regarding his contract or any potential extension. As of now, Peseiro has a valid contract until the completion of the Nations Cup.
“It is unfortunate that some people are busy writing falsehoods. Honestly, the leadership of the football house has not held any meeting with Peseiro over his contract or extension. For now, the Eagles coach has a valid contract till Nations Cup. Sanusi explained.
The Super Eagles have secured their qualification for the 2024 African Nations Cup, finishing atop Group A with 12 points from five matches. Alongside the hosts, Ivory Coast, fourteen other countries have also secured their spots in the 24-team tournament.
Notably, Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen currently leads the goal-scoring chart in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers, having netted seven goals.
