The lawmaker representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ede Dafinone said Nigerians need a great level of insurance awareness because most properties lost to accidents are not insured.
Dafinone who described Nigeria as significantly underinsured, spoke when he was featured as a guest on Arise TV’s programme ‘The Morning Show’ which was monitored by QUEST TIMES.
The lawmaker was responding to questions on the fuel tanker fire incident, which occurred at Oghara, Ethiope West Local Council of Delta State on Independence Day in which five persons, including children, a pregnant woman, and elders, were burnt alive.
When asked if the families of the victims will be compensated and the actual cost of properties lost in the inferno, Dafinone said “On the figure of cost, no I don’t have that. On pictures and evidence of vehicles burnt and goods that were lost, that is not to underplay the lives that were lost, the collation of those losses is something that will be done by underwriters and insurance companies”.
“Although, I should say that we are significantly underinsured in the country. It is highly likely that most of the property damaged was not insured. I think we need a great level of insurance within the country”.
“People should be aware that insurance is worth taking. There are benefits in insuring your goods and property around the country”.
“I am not sure there is any plan at the moment for compensation for the victims. I am not sure where that compensation will come from. I appreciate that the road is a responsibility of the Federal government but I don’t think there is a record in the past about compensation being paid to victims in this type of scenario”.
