In a recent report, Nigerian-based energy company, Riverside LNG, announced that it will commence gas supply to South Africa in the first quarter of 2024.
This was disclosed by David Ige, the Executive of Riverside LNG, in a recent interview in Abuja.
Also, he revealed that both African nations have kick-started discussions of serious energy collaboration.
Quest Times gathered that earlier this year, Riverside LNG entered into a gas-export partnership agreement with Johannes Schuetze Energy Import AG of Germany.
During the interview in Abuja, CEO David Ige, stated that the company is currently in pursuit of new deals on the continent.
He said Nigeria has the largest gas reserves in Africa, “We’d probably close out another segment of the market very early in the year, an off-take for South Africa.”
“There’s a massively evolving gas market in the region, around 3,000 nautical miles of Nigeria. So that covers southern Africa, western Africa, all to northwest Europe and the Caribbean and South America broadly,” he noted.
“A lot of those countries are looking to go gas.”
“We see a huge opportunity for Nigeria in being a trading hub,” Ige added.
However, he refrained from divulging additional information about discussions with South African counterparts, saying there were confidentiality clauses in the agreement.
Additionally, the company said it is actively investigating potential opportunities in Liberia and Cameroon.
According to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Nigeria has 202 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of untapped proven gas reserves.
